Esta: Traveling to USA

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Here are the key points about ESTA:

  1. Purpose: ESTA is designed to enhance security and streamline the process for travelers from VWP countries. It screens travelers before they board a U.S.-bound flight or ship.

  2. Eligibility: Only citizens or nationals of countries that are part of the VWP can apply for ESTA. These countries are generally those with low immigration violation rates and high-security standards.

  3. Application: Travelers must apply online through the official ESTA website. The application process involves providing biographical information, passport details, and answers to security questions.

  4. Approval: Most applicants receive a response within minutes, but it can take up to 72 hours. An approved ESTA allows for multiple entries to the U.S. for up to two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

  5. Duration of Stay: With an approved ESTA, travelers can stay in the U.S. for up to 90 days per visit for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It does not guarantee entry; U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers make the final decision at the port of entry.

  6. Requirements: Travelers must have a valid e-passport, a return or onward ticket, and meet all other VWP requirements. An ESTA is not a visa; it is a travel authorization for VWP travelers.

  7. Cost: As of my knowledge cutoff in June 2023, the application fee for ESTA is $21.

  8. Importance of Accuracy: It's crucial to ensure all information provided in the application is accurate, as errors can lead to denial of entry or delays.
